The main foreign policy advisor of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said Thursday that he communicated to Washington that a 30 -day fire proposed by the United States to pause the war in Ukraine would simply give Kyiv’s forces a very necessary respite on the battlefield.
Russia’s advances along the front since mid -2024 and the attempt of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to reach a peace agreement to end the three -year war in Ukraine have feared that Kyiv, which had the support of the West, can lose the war.
Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Moscow on Thursday to hold conversations. Russian officials said that the United States National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, provided details about the idea of Alto El Fuego on Wednesday and that Russia was willing to discuss it.
Trump had said at the White House on Wednesday that he expected the Kremlin to accept the US proposal of a high fire that Ukraine said he would support.
Yuri Ushakov, former ambassador to Washington who speaks on behalf of Putin about the main foreign policy issues, told the Russian media that he spoke with Waltz on Wednesday to expose Russia’s position on the high fire.
«I exposed our position that this is nothing more than a temporary respite for the Ukrainian military, nothing more,» said Ushakov. «It does not give us anything. It only gives the Ukrainians the opportunity to regroup, gain strength and continue with the same,» he added later.
Ushakov said that Moscow’s goal is «a long -term peaceful agreement that takes into account the legitimate interests of our country and our well -known concerns. It seems to me that no one needs steps that simply) imitate peaceful actions in this situation.»
Asked if Russia therefore rejects the American proposal, Ushakov, who works with Putin in the Kremlin since 2012, said that the president is likely to speak with the media later in the day and exhibit the Russian position in more detail.
The statements of the high position of Kremlin indicate that Putin, Supreme Leader of Russia since 1999, believes that Russian advances on the battlefield in Ukraine and in western Russia give Moscow a strong hand in peace negotiations.
However, it is not clear how Trump will react, after saying Wednesday that he expected Moscow to accept the fire to put an end to the «blood bath» and that in his first mandate he had been harder with Russia than other presidents.
«I can do financially things that would be very bad for Russia,» Trump said. «I don’t want to do that because I want to get peace. I want to see peace and we’ll see. But in a financial sense, yes, we could do very bad things for Russia. It would be devastating for Russia.»
Trump has tried to rebuild relations with Russia to avoid an escalation of the Ukraine War that, according to him, could become the third World War, although it has also maintained both the threat of more sanctions and the perspective of raising them if Moscow seeks to end war.
A few hours after Trump spoke in Washington, the Kremlin published images of Putin dressed in a green camouflage uniform visiting the Kursk region, in western Russia, where Ukraine is about to lose his position after a great offensive of the Russian forces.
Putin, former KGB officer, rarely wears military outfits. The Kremlin said that Russia’s supreme commander had considered it necessary to wear the military uniform.
