Several US National Security Agencies have suspended some counterintelligence operations against Russia amid the efforts of President Donald Trump and his Russian couple, Vladimir Putin, to normalize relations between the two countries, reports Reuters citing familiar sources with the matter.
According to eleven US officials and former officials, much of the work aimed at counteracting the actions of Russian intelligence services, which was actively carried out during the administration of Joe Biden, has stagnated since Trump’s possession.
The media states that during the previous government work groups were created whose objective was to face the alleged «hybrid threats» from Russia. These working groups were headed by the National Security Council (CSN) and at least seven national security agencies participated, who cooperated with European entities.
However, meetings between European and American security officials who used to be held regularly «have not been scheduled» and the CSN has stopped coordinating other US agencies in this area. According to Reuters, the FBI has stopped counteracting the interference of other countries in US electionswhile the personnel of the National Security Department involved in this effort was suspended. At the same time, the Department of Justice dissolved a team that had seized the assets of Russian businessmen.
The work continues
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the US National Security Council, Brian Hughes, said the agency continues to work with other US agencies «for Evaluate and frustrate the threats that are raised to Americans«. «President Trump has made it very clear that any attack against the United States will receive a disproportionate response,» he said.
Also, a senior American NATO official declared that Washington continues to cooperate with its allies in the face of security threats.
