The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that from this Wednesday 26 until Sunday, March 30, the presence of Sahara dust will be recorded at mild to moderate concentration levels in almost all of Venezuela.

The National

According to the body, this phenomenon will reduce cloud formation and rainfall, in addition to affecting visibility in some regions of the country.

Why does this phenomenon occur?

Sahara dust is a mass of sand and mineral particles that emerges from the African desert and is transported by the winds to the Atlantic.

During certain periods of the year, these clouds of dust arrive in America and affect air quality and generate opaque or misty skies. In Venezuela, its arrival usually coincides with dry periods, which decreases rains and increases temperatures.

Recommendations in the presence of Sahara dust in Venezuela

The authorities, when this occurs, recommend the population to take precautions, especially to people with respiratory problems or allergies. Some measures are:

1.- Use outdoor masks, especially in people sensitive to dust.

2.- Stay hydrated to reduce irritation in the throat and mucous membranes.

3.- Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, especially in children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions.

4.- Close windows and doors in homes to minimize dust entry.

5.- Clean surfaces with wet cloths to avoid the accumulation of interior particles.
