Swedish deputy denounces as European «hypocrisy» the support of agreements with Cuba (video)

The communist regime of Cuba prevents all hopes that a democratic transition occurs in the country, the Swedish deputy Markus Wiechel denounced this week.

In what the politician defined as one of his «last speeches on behalf of the conservative group of the Council of Europe,» Wiechel warned that «in Cuba, despite the statements about political reforms, the regime continues – and even intensifies – repression, suppressing dissidents and preventing the hopes of a democratic transition.»

The conservative representative of the Swedish Democratic Party considers a contradiction that Europe remains financed for totalitarian regimes in Latin America.

It is not the first time that representatives of the European Union and, in particular of Sweden, warn about the need for links to be cut with these countries that violate human rights agreements and what is agreed in the protocols for political dialogue.

«In the heart of this discussion is the alarming situation in countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, which have seriously suffered the effects of totalitarian socialism,» said the politician.

In his speech he said that these nations that once were «hopeful with dreams of a prosperous and democratic future, are now plunged into political and economic crises that threaten the very principles of democracy and freedom.»

«I must add that it is, to say at least, a hypocrisy that Europeans say support the Agreement of Political Dialogue and Cooperation (PDCA) between the European Union and Cuba and, at the same time, claim to defend democracy, fundamental freedoms and human rights,» he said.

«The western world, anchored in democratic values and human rights, cannot remain passive. We must intensify our diplomatic, economic and humanitarian efforts to support Latin American nations in the defense of their autonomy and democratic processes,» Wiechel added.

The deputy also warned that through strategic investments and political commitments, China has increased its presence in Latin America, «sometimes displacing the democratic aspirations of peoples.»

For the Cuban Resistance Assembly, based in Miami, United States, this pronouncement opens a new chapter in
The battle to eliminate European financing to the Cuban dictatorship. «

«Markus Wiechel becomes an allied voice of the cause for the freedom of the Cuban people from one of the most relevant democratic institutions in Europe,» said the assembly.
