Trump, Biden, Zelenskyy and Milei among the 200,000 people who come to the Pope’s funeral (video)

More than 200,000 people went to the Plaza de San Pedro on Saturday, to attend the Holy Exequial Mass for the late Pope Francis, who died on April 21, at the age of 88.

«We are gathered in prayer around their mortal remains with the sad heart, but sustained by the certainties of faith,» said the dean of the Cardinal College, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who recalled that «human existence does not end in the tomb, but in the father’s house, in a life of happiness that will not know the sunset.»

Delegations of dozens of countries, leaders of other religious confessions and thousands of faithful around the world filled the square.

Among the most important personalities that went to the ceremony is the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and former president Joe Biden; the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy; the president of Argentina, Javier Milei; the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer.

Prince Guillermo of England and other members of European royalty that lead more than 160 official delegations joined.

Trump and Zelenkyy gathered in private before the start of the funeral.

The White House released this historical image of the two leaders sitting in front of the interior of the Basilica of San Pedro in search of a peaceful end for the Russian war in Ukraine.

«The massive manifestation of affection and participation that we have seen these days (…) shows us how much minds and hearts have touched the intense pontificate of Pope Francis,» said the cardinal.

The remains of the Supreme Pontiff will rest in the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor.
