Exodus context: figures and consequences
This hiring call coincides with an estimated population collapse between 10 % and 18 % in recent years, a reflection of the most intense exodus since 1959. Only to the United States have emigrated more than 850,000 Cubans between 2022 and 2024; Other migratory routes, such as Mexico, Brazil or Uruguay, have added tens of thousands more.
In just two years, Cuba lost more than one million residents, about 10 % of its population, according to official government figures presented in the National Assembly.
The demographer Juan Carlos Albizu-Campos warns that the island has suffered a true “demographic emptying”, especially people of working age, which reduces the productive rhythm and aggravates population aging.

Structural elements of the phenomenon
This exodus is not exclusive result of individual decisions, but obeys deep causes:
Extreme inflation and prolonged shortagewith more than 90 % of the population expressing difficulties in obtaining food and medicines regularly.
Incomplete economic reformsthat after monetary unification substantially reduced the real purchasing power of most homes.
Energy instabilitymarked by blackouts that prolong up to more than 24 hours, affecting basic services and hindering job development.
Brake on professional mobility, with restrictions at the exit of professionals, in contrast to the high costs of migratory procedures.
Direct impact on the airport and key sectors
The talent deficit is palpable in areas such as tourism, health and logistics:
At the airport, the scarcity of specialists in airfields, computer science, logistics and legal advice could compromise the operational quality and efficiency of the service.
In tourism and gastronomy, templates reduced almost half after the pandemic are reported, which limits the recovery capacity.
What is urgent solve
The airport call is a visible response to the immediate deficit, but it will hardly subtract the institution of the migratory trend. Effective retention measures would require:
Substantially improve salaries and benefitsaligning them with the expectations and real needs of qualified personnel, to erode the migratory incentive.
Modernize infrastructureespecially energy, logistics and health, to offer functional work environments.
Facilitate professional trajectorieslegal alternatives and adequate recognition for specialists, which would foster the permanence of talent.
Open dialogues with civil societygenerating participatory policies that respond to the real expectations of the population, not only institutional speeches.
