«Great news, hopeful»: Maduro after approval of the «International Day against Unilateral Coercive Measures» at the UN

Nicolás Maduro today announced optimism that the United Nations Organization (UN) has approved a Resolution proposed by Venezuela and the «UN Group of the UN Letter» to establish the December 4, 2025 like him World fight against unilateral coercive measures.

Maduro described the news as «great news, hopeful,» highlighting international recognition to the initiative of his country. The resolution, according to the president, seeks to «reject any type of unilateral sanction.»

This UN decision represents a diplomatic victory for Venezuela, which has been strongly impacted by unilateral coercive measures imposed by various nations, particularly the United States. The designation of an international day dedicated to this cause seeks to increase global awareness about the effects of these measures and promote attachment to international law and the UN letter.

The measure was adopted in the United Nations General Assembly, where the elimination of unilateral extraterritorial coercive measures used as an instrument of political and economic coercion was discussed. The vote was 116 votes in favor, 51 against and 6 abstentions. Countries of the Global North, including EU states, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Japan and the United States, voted against.
