Oviedo Rodríguez, 44 and mother of two children, was serving a five -year jail sentence. The woman, one of the five imprisoned for protesting against the blackouts on October 10, 2022, in Güines, Mayabeque Province, was convicted of the crimes of public disorders and contempt.
This year’s prize was released this Saturday, in Miami, during a patriotic breakfast organized by the Cuban democratic directory.
In 2024, the prize was awarded to Ernesto Borges PérezCuban political prisoner sentenced to 30 years in prison, of which he has fulfilled more than 25 in the team combined, in Havana.
In 2023, the award was granted to the Cuban political prisoners, and the people of Ukraine, in their fight against Russian invasion.
Instituted in 2001, the Pedro Luis Boitel Libertad Award is delivered every year by an international panel, which integrates a coalition of Cuban opponents and European organizations, to an outstanding figure in the struggle for freedom in Cuba or in the world.
Boitel, a Cuban poet and dissident who opposed the dictatorial regimes of Fulgencio Batista and Fidel Castro, was sentenced in 1961 to 10 years in prison. He died in prison, on May 25, 1972, after a long hunger strike.
