Salvadoran wife deported by mistake defends his innocence and load against Trump and Bukele: «This should never have happened»

Jennifer Vásquez, the wife of Kilmer Abrego García, the Salvadoran migrant sent by error to the maximum security prison of El Salvador by the administration of Donald Trump, defended his innocence this Wednesday and carried against the US president and his Salvadoran counterpart, Nayib Bukele.

«They have spent 28 days since I lost my husband, since my children do not hug him, since his mother does not kiss him, or his brother talks to him. This should never have happened, ”Vásquez said in a press conference with Democratic congressmen.

The wife, accompanied by Garcia’s mother and her brother, said that the governments of the United States and El Salvador «continue to delay the reunification of their family.

«The continuous and terrifying attacks of the Administration will never make us silence,» he added before thanking the congressmen who, he said, are supporting them.

One of them, the leader of the Hispanic Caucus, Adriano Espaillat, advanced that he will write to Bukele «this week» to personally ask for the liberation of Ábrego García and urge him that his family can go to visit him, since, «he has not known anything about him for more than 25 days. We do not know what your state is.

«This is someone who has not broken any law, who has been legally here in the United States, and who, in my opinion, was kidnapped and sent to a Salvadoran prison,» said Espaillat.

The Supreme Court was right this week to the Trump government and stopped a ruling from a lower court that ordered the return of Ábrego García to the United States.

Ábrego García is 24 years old, he is married to an American citizen and have three children, the minor of five years, born in the country and all of them with special needs.

He fled from El Salvador for the extortion and threats that he and his family received from the Barrio 18 gang, according to judicial documents presented by his defense.

He worked in construction and was taking classes at the University of Maryland to obtain a license in that sector and be able to «win a better salary,» according to his wife.

In 2019, he was arrested by immigration authorities after an anonymous informant linked him to Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13). He presented an asylum and deportation protection request, the latter was approved by the judge.

However, he was arrested in March 2025 in what looked like a routine traffic stop. At the time of arrest, the officers told his wife that the immigration status of Ábrego García «had changed» and it was not until he identified him in a photo of social networks that he did not know where he was.

The man was transferred to a detention center in Texas and then to the maximum security prison of El Salvador on the occasion of an agreement between the governments of Trump and Bukele to send there to alleged criminals.

His lawyers claim that the authorities «were aware» of their client’s migratory benefit and still decided to send it to the Salvadoran megaprision.

The American immigration authorities described the sending of «error», but claim that they have no power to return it to the United States because it is now in custody of a foreign government.

Trump’s administration also argues that Abrego García, who was never tried in the United States, is a member of MS-13 and should not return to the country.
