Single mothers, objective of children’s abusers in appointment applications, according to report

Sexual abusers of minors use appointment applications to gain the confidence of single mothers and access their children, according to a new report published Wednesday.

The document, based on surveys to sexual aggressors made by the International Childlight Institute, based at the University of Edinburgh and the University of New Wales del Sur, in Australia, warns of a hidden side in appointment applications, where the aggressors could use these platforms to manipulate women and approach their children for abuse.

The ‘Swipe Wrong’ report, disseminated by Childlight -which collects data on child safety -part of a broader investigation into child sexual exploitation, an industry that moves billions and benefits aggressors, organized crime and even conventional companies.

It emphasizes that men who have committed sexual crimes against minors have almost four times more likely to resort to dating sites that have not done so.

According to the survey of 5,000 men in the United Kingdom, the US and Australia who admitted classifiable online behaviors such as abuse, 66 % used appointment applications and 22 % use them daily, considering that single mothers are especially vulnerable. Debi Fry, Childlight strategy director, told Efe that the aggressors take advantage of design failures to create false profiles and contact many mothers without being detected.

«We need more solid identity controls. They will not stop everyone, but they will make it difficult to hide after a false name, ”he said. Fry also asked to raise awareness of the users: «Avoid uploading photos with their children. If someone shows more interest in your children than to meet you, that is an alarm signal ».
In a statement, Childlight mentions that according to the German online statistics portal ‘statista’, about 381 million people use this type of applications, such as Tinder.

This adds to another survey of the Australian Criminology Institute, which revealed that 12 % of the users of these platforms received requests to facilitate abuse, often related to their own children. Among the most recent cases is that of the Scottish truck Paul Stewart, sentenced to three and a half years in prison for abusing minors after establishing relationships with their mothers through these platforms.

A court in Duende explained that he photographed the victims and shared the material on the Dark Web. The report warns that most of these applications lack adequate identity controls. «There is no reason why they do not adopt the verification methods that are already used in sectors such as banking or online game,» said Professor Michael Salter, co -director of the report, in a statement.

11.5 % of respondents admitted to feeling sexual attraction towards minors, and 11 % confessed to having committed sexual crimes. The study, which is part of the Searchlight collection -founded by the Human Dignity Foundation -also outlines abusers as people who may seem reliable: more likely to have children, work with minors or have higher studies.

In addition, they tend to participate in online purchases, video games or use cryptocurrencies and consume sexual content. Researchers believe that these patterns could help authorities and banks to detect suspicious behaviors and warn that some technological companies benefit from the traffic linked to abuse.
