The personnel who will attend the conclave lends the oath to keep the secret

All personnel, ecclesiastical or secular, from the ceremonies to the elevatorists, who will be linked in the organization of the conclave to choose the new Pope, will provide on Monday oath to keep absolute secret of everything that happens.

All people who will participate in the conclave from day 7, approved by Cardinal Camarlengo and the three cardinals attending, according to the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, must provide and sign the oath at 5:00 p.m. (15.00 GMT) in the Pauline Chapel.

The measure will affect the Secretary of the Cardinal College, the master of the Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations and the Pontifical Ceremonies, but also doctors and nurses, elevatorists of the Apostolic Palace, personnel in charge of the dining and cleaning services or even the flower staff and the technical services, as well as the colonel and a major of the Pontifical Swiss Guard Sistine

After being instructed on the meaning of the oath, they must pronounce and personally sign the formula prescribed before Camarlengo, Kevin Joseph Farrell.

When confidentiality swears, they can never reveal, what they see or listen. The formula of the oath, which will be a private act, far from cameras and journalists, is solemn and entails, in case of non -compliance, excommunication.

«I promise and swear to observe absolute secret with anyone who is not part of the College of Cardinals voters, and this perpetuity unless he receives special permission expressly given by the new pontiff chosen or for his successors, especially what directly or indirectly refers to the vote and scrutiny for the choice of the high pontiff,» says the oath.

And he continues: «I also promise and I swear to use any means of recording, audition or visualization of anything that takes place in the city of the Vatican during the electoral period and, in particular, of anything that is directly or indirectly related to the operations connected to the choice itself.»

The cardinals will carry out their oath after their entrance on May 7 in the afternoon in the Sistine Chapel. Once the last of the voters, the teacher of the papal celebrations, Diego Ravelli, will pronounce the two words that will officially open the conclave: «Extra omnes», that is, everyone outside, keying the door of the place.

Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, preacher of the Pontifical House for 40 years, will be directed to the voters for the second meditation planned by the Constitution.

Once his reflection is finished, Cardinal CantaMessa will leave the Sistine Chapel along with Archbishop Ravelli and the cardinals will make the first of the voting.

The conclave will be chaired by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, in the absence of the Dean, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, 91.
