The US has achieved a «total restart» in relation to China, says Trump after agreement on tariffs

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, declared on Monday that the United States has achieved a «total restart» in relations with China after both countries agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs for 90 days.

President Trump said he does not expect US tariffs on Chinese imports to return to 145% after the 90 -day pause they have agreed, and added that he believes that Washington and Beijing will reach an agreement beyond this temporary pause.

«They have agreed to open China, open it completely. And I think it will be fantastic for China. I think it will be fantastic for us. And I think it will be excellent for unification and peace,» Trump said at a press conference at the White House.

After conversations this weekend in Geneva, it was announced that the United States will reduce the additional tariffs it imposed on Chinese imports in April of this year from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on US imports will be reduced from 125% to 10%. The new measures are valid for 90 days.

The president specified that the agreement does not cover tariffs on cars, steel, aluminum or pharmaceutical products.

He also described the conversations in Geneva as «friendly», adding that the relationship between both nations «is very good» and that the United States does not seek to harm China.

Geneva meetings were the first face -to -face interactions between high American and Chinese economic officials since Trump returned to power last January, and launched a global tariff offensive, imposing tariffs particularly high to China.

President Trump said he could speak with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, at the end of this week, amid the advances that have been achieved between these two economic rivals. Washington and Beijing have announced in a joint statement that they will establish a mechanism to continue conversations about economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

In February, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, claiming national security reasons and the fentanyl crisis. He accused China of not curbing the flow of fentanil and its precursors to the United States, which, he said, was feeding a deadly opioid epidemic.

China quickly responded with tariffs from 10% to 15% on US energy and agricultural products, included in a blacklist US companies and restricted critical mineral exports.

During the following months, both parties drastically intensified their measures: American tariffs reached 145% and those of China 125%, along with other non -tariff reprisals, such as the suspension of Tiktok negotiations and the cut of rare earth exports, which disturbed world trade.
