Outrage against Etecsa is viral and reaches the universities of Cuba

The outrage at the monopoly of telecommunications in Cuba due to the sudden increase in the price of Internet services has become viral on social networks and has climbed to the official University Student Federation (FEU).

Etecsa announced that as of May 30, 2025 it would increase the rates for the plans and packages of the mobile service, a measure that comes to fill the patience of the Cubans, already tired of the blackouts and the serious economic crisis they are going through.

The users of this company have made public their discontent in media portals and social networks, where memes point to the company’s greed that invoices millions of dollars annually, in times of great hardship for most Cubans.

In the last hours, the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana made public a joint statement of students of several faculties, expressing «disagreement with the way in which the measures were implemented by the Telecommunications Company of Cuba SA (ETECSA), which significantly limit Internet access for the student population and the whole citizenship.»

The document is supported by the University Student Federation of the University of Havana (FEU UH), the University Student Federation of the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana (FEN FCOM), together with the Secretariat of the Faculty of Chemistry (FEU Chemistry), the Higher Institute of Applied Technologies and Sciences (FEU INSTEC), the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing (Feu Matcom) and Sociology (FEU FHS) and the Higher Institute of International Relations (FEU ISRI).

«We consider that these measures restrict the fundamental right to information, education and communication, essential pillars for the academic and personal development of the students. The increase to the recharge of data beyond the 6GB constitutes an obstacle that makes it difficult to fulfill our educational and professional responsibilities,» the students indicate.

In the letter they propose to Etecsa and the competent authorities «the review of these measures, which are harmful to the integral development of youth and society in general; as well as the search for alternatives with the objective of solving the inconveniences for specific groups such as university youths.»

For its part, Etecsa, in a statement, promised to offer «services in national currency for the enjoyment of the population, maintain free access to digital teaching environments and continue ensuring connectivity to sectors of social importance as support for the digital transformation process in the country.»
