Relatives of political prisoner denounce lack of medical assistance in prison in Quivicán (Video)

The Quivicán prison authorities, located in the Mayabeque province, have not provided medical attention to the political prisoner Roberto Pérez Fonseca, who suffers strong abdominal pain due to a worsening of his gastric condition.

Pérez Fonseca was sentenced to 10 years of deprivation of liberty for breaking a photo of Fidel Castro during the protests of July 11, 2021 in the Mayabequian capital, San José de Las Lajas.

«Every three months a specialist has to do with him, but they have not taken it. It has been with strong pains for more than 15 days and has not had attention and there is no medicine here. When he has the pain, the medication omeprazole that I take him is injected, but that is to relieve, but he is bleeding. Attention does not have any,» he denounced Martí News, Lisset Fonseca, the mother of the political prisoner.

The lady, who appeared on Tuesday in the prison to demand the command officers to guarantee the assistance of a gastroenterologist for her child, affected by acute esophagitis, erythematous and congestive duodenitis and overwhelmed by duodenal bulb ulcers.

«They have not gone to attend me. The state security called me to tell me that if I had brought the medications, that they will evaluate it tomorrow, first by the prison doctor. I replied that I stay, that I need to talk to a boss,» the mother explained to our environment.

«I am planted outside the prison until they attend it properly. I told him, this is an urgency and I will not let him die,» he said.

An official of the penitentiary establishment refused to give Martí news about the situation of the political prisoner, but said he does receive medical care.

The deficient medical services and the shortage of medicines continue to be the main problem facing inmates in Cuba, according to the Cuban Prison Documentation Center, which has managed to verify numerous deaths in custody for that cause.

In August 2024, relatives denounced that prison personnel where Pérez Fonseca is being stolen from the syringes to administer his medicine.

The activist exiled in Canada Alberto Fonseca Ortega, known on social networks as Albert Fense, has repeatedly expressed his concern for the life of his brother Roberto Pérez Fonseca.

«Roberto’s deterioration of health is by leaps and bounds, caused by punishment cells for demanding freedom. My brother has more than seven years of unfair conviction and I don’t know if he will leave her alive. They are killing him slowly,» he denounced.
