Venezuelan Chancellor meets with UN coordinator to address migrants situation

Through his Telegram channel, Foreign Minister Yván Gil reported on a working meeting with Gianluca Rampolla, a resident and humanitarian coordinator of the UN in Venezuela. During the meeting, Gil transmitted the request of the Venezuelan government so that the United Nations system acts before complaints about the treatment of Venezuelan migrants in the United States and El Salvador.

Gil expressed the Executive’s concern for human rights violations that would affect nationals in those countries, noting that many would be arrested without justification. In addition, he mentioned that official figures, 238 Venezuelans would currently be deprived of liberty in El Salvador.

The minister compared these situations with historical persecution events, although he did not delve into details.

On the other hand, it was known that Nicolás Maduro maintained a telephone contact with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to request a greater implication of the agency in the protection of Venezuelan migrants.

According to a government statement, both representatives of the United Nations would have expressed their willingness to activate the necessary mechanisms to address this situation.
